Social Security Works Statement on Marriage Equality

Statements on Marriage Equality Decision

(Washington, DC) – The Supreme Court has issued a landmark decision today. The following are statements from the leaders of the Strengthen Social Security Coalition and Social Security Works:

“Today marks a historic step in our nation’s march toward equality and justice for all. The right to marry, an essential civil right, has enormous economic consequences.  Our Social Security system is designed to protect workers and their families in the event of disability, death, or old age.  Not only is this a victory for fairness but also for the economic security of same-sex married couples. They now with absolute certainty cannot be denied the Social Security benefits they have earned for each other. This is truly a new day.”

-Nancy Altman, Co-Chair of the Strengthen Social Security Campaign-

“The Supreme Court’s decision to make marriage equality the law of the land is a huge victory for justice and fairness for all American families, now and in the future.  Now, married same sex-couples in every state and their families will now be able to claim their earned Social Security protections – the same spouse, survivor, and young dependent benefits as adults and children in every other marriage. This is a great day for our country.
