(Washington, D.C.)— During last night's Republican debate, Rick Perry called Social Security a "monstrous lie" and a "Ponzi scheme," he also refuses to deny that his goal is to end Social Security. Mr. Perry should realize that the only thing he is going to end with a position like that is his own political career.

Washington, D.C. – An Associated Press story earlier this week described how the Social Security disability insurance program is projected to experience a funding shortfall as early as 2017, meaning that benefits could not be paid in full and on time to those eligible to receive them. While the story struck an alarming tone – referring to the ”stampede for benefits” and “a program that’s been running in the red for years” – there was nothing new in the report and the basic financial soundness of Social Security has not changed, which permits benefits to be fully paid for the next 25 years or so.

(Washington, D.C.) — Eight leading veterans’ groups sent letters to President Obama, and to members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate today, urging them to continue their commitments to veterans and their families during negotiations over the federal deficit by opposing any effort to reduce benefits by adopting the chained consumer price index (CPI) formula for determining Cost of Living Adjustments (COLAs) for recipients.
