Peter Peterson Spent Nearly Half A Billion In Washington Targeting Social Security, Medicare

05-15-12

Ryan Grim & Paul Blumenthal

WASHINGTON -- Peter Peterson, a Wall Street billionaire who has been calling for cuts to Social Security and other government programs for years, is hosting a "fiscal summit" Tuesday that brings together Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, former President Bill Clinton, Rep. Paul Ryan, House Speaker John Boehner, Tom Brokaw and Politico's John Harris, among a host of other elites who will gather at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium. The bipartisan luminaries will be carrying on a discussion to a large extent framed by Peterson, who has spent lavishly to shape a national conversation focusing on the deficit rather than on jobs and economic growth.

Bill Clinton Advises Obama to Talk More About Deficit Reduction

05-15-12

Chris Good

The former president said he favors overhaul resembling the Simpson-Bowles plan, produced by Obama’s bipartisan commission to address the deficit. Clinton suggested there should be a “big bipartisan coalition for this,” in reference to centrist-deficit reforms. “We may just have to wait until the election’s over. The American people are going to have to decide.”

Indentured Servitude for Seniors: Social Security Garnished for Student Debts

05-15-12

Ellen Brown

U.S. taxpayers now pay nearly half a trillion dollars annually to finance our federal debt.  By financing the debt itself rather than paying interest to private parties, the government could divert what it would have paid in interest into tuition, jobs, infrastructure and social services.

Talking With Krugman: He's Anti-Austerity, Pro-Peter Gabriel, and "Not That Cosmic"

05-15-12

Richard (RJ) Eskow

Paul Krugman's book is called End This Depression Now! (exclamation point included).  If that sounds like a self-help book -- the sequel to Listening to Prozac, maybe, or something by Dr. Wayne Dyer -- that's not altogether inappropriate in this age of collective near-despair.

Boehner to Obama: Cuts Must Exceed Next Debt-Limit Hike

05-15-12

John Parkinson

At an address to the Peter G. Peterson Fiscal Summit later today, House Speaker John Boehner will call on President Obama to “again meet the principle of cuts greater than the hike” on any agreement to a looming debt-limit increase, which is expected during the lame-duck session after the election. “When the time comes, I will again insist on my simple principle of cuts and reforms greater than the debt-limit increase,” Boehner, R-Ohio, will say, according to excerpts provided by his office. “This is the only avenue I see right now to force the elected leadership of this country to…
